What can your partner do during labor? 🤔🙌🏻
I’m a big fan of getting partners involved in labour to help mom – there’s actually a LOT you can do as a support person to help mom with labour!
Here are just a few tips 🙂
✅ Counterpressure: Sometimes done on the sides of mom’s hips, other times done on the small of her back – this is a common intervention that many moms react positively too! It not only helps to relieve a bit of contraction pain, but HARD constant pressure against mom’s hips can help fan mom’s hips out just slightly & encourage cervical dilation.
✅ Reminding mom to relax & get through those peaks: YES! Relax, relax, relax – encouragement can go MILES during labour.
✅ Help with changing positions: Do you know how hard it is to change positions when you are mid-transition? Pretty dang hard! Support mom by reading her cues and helping her change positions as needed. There are about a hundred different positions you can do solo or with a partner during labour!
✅ Positive Affirmations: Nothing like a little oxytocin boost from all the positive affirmations in your labour room! Again, while positive affirmations are just nice to hear…they can help you progress during labour too!! Not kidding. You know that “feel-good-feeling” you get when someone is telling you how amazing you are doing, or when someone just makes you feel great? That’s oxytocin! Guess what hormone is responsible for making your contract & progress further during labour….oxytocin!
Remember, everyone responds to labour interventions differently – some moms like hard counterpressure with every contraction, others need a soft touch, and some women just need stern in-your-face encouraging! 😅
It’s about recognizing what is working best for mom, and keep doing THAT – & changing interventions as needed :)
How did your partner/support person help you best during labour??
