How Dilated Are You - A Visual Guide - Parenting - 2023

Just in case you are like me and are a visual learner, here you go! ⠀

🙃 During labor, the cervix opens to make room for the baby’s head to descend into the vagina from the uterus. ⠀

👉🏼 The cervix is the bottom part of the uterus

👉🏼 Cervical dilation is the concrete proof that you are in fact, in labor. ⠀

👉🏼 Cervical dilation happens at a pretty predictable pace MOST OF THE TIME! ⠀

👩🏻‍⚕️ In early labor, the cervix is essentially warming up for the big game. It’s softening and shortening and getting ready to open. ⠀

👶🏼 The process of softening and shortening takes much longer if it’s your first baby. For those of us who have already had a baby, it can happen very fast and all at once. ⠀

🙏🏻 Typically once you get to 5cm, you will most often dilate at least a cm an hour. ⠀

What’s your experience with dilation in labor?

  1. My labor was 50 hours long but finally had a natural birth. After 24 hours of contractions every 5 minutes I barely was 1 cm dilatated.

  2. Merhaba 6 aylık bir bebeğim var çok zor geçiriyoruz ihtiyacım olmasa yazmadım lütfen sesimi duyun ve bana yardım edin

  3. I stopped dilating at 6cm and ended up having a C-Section. Best decision I made. My baby made it into the world safe and I didn’t have to keep waiting for my super slow labor to progress.
