My oldest learned to walk on linoleum and carpet. He had some falls and bruises, but that’s just part of being a baby. Honestly he learned how to walk on the linoleum first because it was easier for him to be on a firmer surface.

They don’t NEED it but personally I would want something soft for falls and what not. I wouldn’t want my baby to hit their head/chin on the hardwood. My son almost slammed his face down multiple times when learning to crawl. We had a mat, but a plush rug would probably be fine.

Can a baby learn to crawl on a regular rug? If I have to buy a play mat, I figure I may as well buy a rug we can use in a bedroom later (whole house is hardwood, no carpets or rugs). But I have no idea if that would work or not. Do they need that kind of plushy foamy surface?
