I’m 6 weeks postpartum and I’ve been dealing with anxiety lately. I’ll have a panic attack in my sleep — usually I’ll wake up in the middle of the night trying to breathe/catch my breath, my heart is racing, and I feel nauseous. It takes some time to feel “okay” again. And in these instances, I feel like maybe I’m not cut out to be a mother. And then I feel really guilty thinking this.

These panic attacks happen on a daily basis, even when I take short naps. I’ve heard that “it will get better” but it’s hard to imagine going through it. Anyone go through something similar? When did it get better?

I’m so sorry you’re feeling this way! It is common but it didn’t make it any less painful. I went through something very similar when my baby was born, very anxious for the first few weeks and then it settled into depression. I found a good therapist, exercise and a low dose of Zoloft really helped me for me! Definitely talk to your doctor, have you had your 6 week checkup yet?

I know exactly the feeling you’re describing, and it really is awful. I started 10mg Lexapro about two years ago (before I got pregnant) and that and biweekly therapy have been life changing with managing my anxiety. Not sure if you’re open to medication, but worth a chat with your doctor about! I know a few friends who stayed on SSRIs for about 6 months postpartum, and then weaned off and are doing great. I’ll prob be on SSRIs indefinitely, but certainly not the case for everyone!
