I wish I had gone to some intense therapy to fix what my parents broke, so that I wouldn’t have to scramble to fix the machine while it’s running, at my kid’s expense. I honestly thought it was as simple as, “I hereby declare that I will not be like my parents.” It isn’t. If you don’t rip those habits out of yourself, you’ll be like them. There are things I’m still realising to this day were messed up about my childhood, and it takes all of my willpower to try to not do those things to my kid.
