You can successfully continue to breastfeed after returning to work–if you plan ahead. The best time to do some of this planning is while you are still pregnant.
Here is a list of Breastfeeding Magazine’s top five tips to help you to start preparing for returning to work now in order to make it go smoother when your baby arrives.
1. Discuss your plans with your employer or make sure that you will have adequate accommodations for expressing breastmilk at work.
2. Try to arrange childcare at or near your work. Find someone who you trust who is also supportive of breastfeeding to care for your children. Consider sharing childcare with another friend or family member.
3. Find a support group near you with other working women who breastfeed. If you dont know of any, contact your local LeLeche League for help.
4. Invest in a high quality breast pump. This is probably the single best use of your money. Dont be tempted to buy the cheapest pump you can find. A good quality breast pump will save you time and money later.
5. Look realistically at your work options. Can you work some days from home? Switch to part-time? Can you come back to work slowly? Know your options so that you can make the best choices for your growing family. Discuss these options with your employer now before the baby comes.
Following these steps will help to ensure that when time comes to return to work, you will be able to continue breastfeeding successfully.
