You have probably heard the old saying that when you are pregnant you are eating for two, while that doesn’t mean that you should eat double portions of cake and ice cream, it does mean that you should be more cautious about what you eat. Everything that you eat crosses your placenta to your baby, which is why it is so important to eat as many healthy foods as possible. Folic acid is very important, particularly during early pregnancy, as well as all the vitamins and nutrients, as your baby will need them to grow strong and thrive. The only way your baby has to get these essentials is from you, namely through your diet, so you have to take it seriously, and be more conscientious of what you eat.

I’m 20 weeks pregnant. Pre-pregnancy weight was 140 (I’m 5′1″). My midwife says I should gain 15-25 lbs. I ate through the nausea and gained about 9 lbs during the first trimester. Between weeks 14-20 I gained 2 lbs. That leaves me 4-14 lbs for the next 20 weeks and it feels like an impossible task. I already feel like a gigantic whale. I’ve been exercising everyday and am eating fruits, veggies, and whole grains.
My midwife said because I started out about 7lbs overweight and then gained 10 lbs quickly ( all fat, no baby ) and that I may actually lose weight with the exercise increase and that was perfectly fine as long as my caloric intake was good. But, here I am…stuck The scale stays the same or goes up by half a pound. I’m frustrated. I was certain I would lose some body fat with the healthy lifestyle change. I don’t want to be thin, I would actually just be thrilled if I held at this weight for a while, meaning baby is growing and healthy, but my butt is shrinking. Am I being paranoid about this or am I being realistic about too much weight gain? Two of my midwives seem unconcerned as long as I don’t gain at the rate I gained during the first trimester, the third midwife asked me to increase the amount of exercise I’m doing and keep a food log. My husband thinks I’m being silly, but I honestly feel physically uncomfortable and out of shape.
