Nutrition During Pregnancy & Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy

Providing sufficient nutrition during pregnancy for you and your developing baby is particularly important. A balanced diet is important on quality of the food, fresh fruits and vegetables, plain cereals. These foods are rich in vitamins and minerals provide a high content of fiber which helps constipation which often occurs during pregnancy. Cheese, eggs, milk, lean meat, fish and poultry are excellent protein sources. Milk products also provide high amounts of calcium which is essential to maintain your own teeth and bones, and for the skeletal development of your baby. The higher need for iron during pregnancy, due to increasing blood volume, can be best met by green, leafy vegetables and liver.

Foods to avoid during pregnancy are very rich or highly spiced food, it is also best to limit your intake of sweet foods, do not drink alcohol. If you are a smoker stop smoking and do not take medication, unless prescribed by your doctor.

A normal weight gain during pregnancy is in between 7-11kg. Try not to gain more than 1kg per month on average since excessive weight gain complicates return of your figure after the birth of your baby and may also cause complications during pregnancy and delivery.

As your pregnancy advances, you will tire more easily. Take the time to rest whenever possible. Occasionally you may notice some swelling of your ankles – this normally can be relieved by lying down for a while with your legs slightly raised. Should your hands and face swell, it is best to contact your doctor without delay. During the last months of pregnancy heartburns, headaches or leg cramps may occur. If these are persistent, tell your doctor.

Any vaginal bleeding or discharge is potentially serious and should be immediately reported to your doctor.
