Normal Weight Gain During Pregnancy – So What is “Normal?”

Normal weight gain during pregnancy is the goal of every new expectant mother. We all want to do what is not only best for our babies, but best for our bodies so we can snap back to our pre-pregnancy size. But, with such high expectations can also come so many questions! Here are the answers to some of the most common questions about pregnancy weight gain.

1) HOW MUCH WEIGHT SHOULD I BE GAINING – TOTAL?

- Under Weight: If your pre-pregnancy weight was considered “underweight” (BMI of less than 18.5), you should gain anywhere between 25-40 pounds.

- Normal Weight: If your pre-pregnancy weight was considered “normal” (BMI from 18.5 – 24.9), you should gain anywhere between 25-35 pounds.

- Over Weight: If your pre-pregnancy weight was considered “overweight” (BMI 25 – 29.9), you should gain anywhere between 15-25 pounds.

- Obese: If your pre-pregnancy weight was considered “obese” (BMI 30 and over), you should gain anywhere between 11-20 pounds.

2) HOW MUCH IS NORMAL WEIGHT GAIN DURING PREGNANCY FOR TWINS?

- If you are having twins your weight gain should be 37 to 54 pounds if you started at a healthy weight, 31 to 50 pounds if you were overweight, and 25 to 42 pounds if you were obese.

3) WHICH TRIMESTER SHOULD YOU GAIN THE MOST WEIGHT?

- Typically your third trimester is the one where you are gaining the most weight. Why? Because this is when your baby will be growing leaps and bounds! During your third trimester, more specifically during your last month of pregnancy, your baby has developed and now is working on mainly gaining size for his/her new life.
