How Does Drugs, Such As Nyquil And Tylenol, Affect To Your Baby During Breastfeeding?

How come you’d better not take any medicine during breastfeeding?
I mean, I know it’s NOT good to your baby since it goes through your breastmilk.
But how does it affect to your baby??
Not seriously brain damage or something like that, right?

Your body filters out most of the meds before it reaches your breastmilk.
Tylenol is ok in breastfeeding, as is Advil and the like.
Nyquil is not recommended because the psudoephedrine dries up milk. It can also sedate a newborn, but not so much in older infants.
Many meds have been approved for use in breastfeeding..in fact, most are. There is a Dr. that studies just that. He has a book, Medication and Mothers Milk (website here: http://neonatal.ttuhsc.edu/lact/medicati… -log in as a guest) , that ALL docs and pharmisists should have, but most do not. Many moms have weaned their babes on bad advice by MDs about meds.
But, yes, some meds can hurt. But most do not because of the fact that there are only trace amounts that make it to the breastmilk. All the warnings you see on meds about talking to a doc if preg or nursing…just a cover your butt on the drug companies part.

Nursing mothers actually can take a fairly wide range of medication without worry. Most do not show up in the milk in significant amounts.
    There’s a database here:http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/ht…
that lists reported effects on nurslings for a variety of drugs.
