If you and your partner are perfectly healthy and don’t have infertility issues, finding out the best time to get pregnant will substantially raise your odds of conceiving.

If you are determined to get pregnant, then it’s very important for you to find out the days you will ovulate. Your primary task is to find out when the crucial time is – your most fertile days for sexual intercourse to increase your chances of conceiving.

Before going further to find out your best time to get pregnant, it’s important to understand a bit about your body and fertility cycle to help you calculate the possible dates of your ovulation.

The period between ovulation and the first day of your menstrual cycle (i.e. first day of your period) is known as the luteal phase. This period consists of 14 days and is generally the same for most women. Two weeks after your ovulation, your menses begins.

Next, what you need to know is the date due for the next period. You will be able to estimate your days of ovulation by counting back 12-16 days from the due date. Generally, if you have a regular cycle of 28 days, you will ovulate on the 14th day (calculated from the first day of your period).

The ovulation date can also be checked through the Basal Body Temperature (BBT) method. This is a method that requires monitoring your body temperature every morning using a fine calibrated BBT thermometer. The thermometer will show a higher temperature on the day of ovulation than the other days.

This is what happens in your body: your egg starts to develop from the end of your period, and between the 8th to 12th days it is at its maximum. So, your chances of conceiving are the most if you have intercourse on the 8th, the 10th and the 12th day. This is the best time to have sexual intercourse to increase your chances of becoming pregnant.

Generally, the lifespan of an egg is between 12 to 24 hours; but there is a possibility that the egg will no longer be viable after 15 or 16 hours, said fertility experts. Meaning that, your egg is good only for a period of 12 to 16 hours after ovulation.

What about your partner? Yes, it seems there is also a best time to get pregnant for a man! If a couple has intercourse too frequently, the man’s fertility level might be affected – sperm count as well as sperm mobility may become less than optimum to fertilize the egg. On the other hand, if sexual intercourse is not often, sperms are likely to become aged and tired, and deficient in the desired strength to fertilize the egg. According to fertility experts, coitus performed twice weekly produces the best result.

While the female egg has a short lifespan, sperms stay alive for 2-5 days in the vaginal canal. It may be fruitful to have intercourse two days earlier than the date of ovulation, so that the sperms have greater chances of meeting a living egg.

Because the woman’s egg only survives for about a day it is important that there is a plentiful supply of sperm in her body to fertilize the newly released egg. It is important that your cervical fluid is in the right condition for you to get pregnant. Throughout your normal monthly cycle, the cervical fluid changes in consistency. A few days before the egg is released from the ovary, the cervical fluid will begin to become clear and “elastic”. When you notice this change in consistency, you will know that your egg is about to be released soon. This is the time to have intercourse frequently so that there is a plentiful supply of sperm available when the egg moves down the fallopian tube. Fortunately sperm can survive for a few days providing that the cervical fluid is in good condition. There are a couple of things that you can do to ensure your cervical fluid is healthy. Drink plenty of water and increase your vitamin A intake slightly, for example eating carrots.

In conceiving a baby, timing is everything, and if your timing is off, well, getting pregnant may be a long and frustrating journey instead of the fun and rewarding experience it should be.

In order to get pregnant, ovulation must occur. Now many women are familiar with many aspects of their body and monthly cycle, but ovulation is one of those things that frequently occurs without much notice. However, a thorough knowledge of one’s body, especially ovulation will make getting pregnant much easier.

Fortunately, there are many ways to track your body to find out when ovulation will occur. This is important because knowledge of the ovulation is critical for conception. One way to estimate your time of ovulation is to estimate from the first date of your last period. In general a woman’s period will start 14 days after ovulation. So to calculate your estimated time of ovulation, simply take the time between your periods, and back it up 14 days from your next expected period to find the estimated date of ovulation.

An alternative, and more accurate way to find out the period of ovulation, is based on the Basal Body Temperature. In this method, your basal-body temperature is recorded by a specially-made BBT thermometer (which is inserted in the vagina.) This is done once a day, in the morning. You will track this temperature each day. When you notice a significant rise in temperature, this is the time of your ovulation.

There is conflicting information on how often a couple should try to conceive during ovulation and shortly after ovulation. Some believe that sperm count goes down with frequent intercourse, and as a result, there chance of conception goes down. Conversely, others think that sperm becomes ineffective and has a lower potency during prolonged periods of abstinence (and by prolonged, here we mean more than a day or two) In general, whatever works best for you and your partner is what you should try – because getting pregnant is supposed to be fun – not something you have to check off of your to-do list. But if you need a number, the general recommendation is about once every other day. Once you have tracked your cycle and know when you are going to ovulate, it’s not bad idea to start a day or two before you think you will ovulate as well.

One of the great things about the Basal Body Temperature or the Estimated Cycle method is that they are both holistic approaches to getting pregnant. And in general holistic solutions are better and healthier than other solutions. And since they are better planned than just going “natural” you can properly prepare yourself. At the same time, they do not rely on the chemicals of prescription drugs to aid in conception.

Other holistic methods to increasing fertility and thus increasing your chances of conception include medicines and herbs of Chinese origin as well as healthy changes in your eating habits and overall lifestyle. You can also participate in suitable exercise methods such as yoga, and, if necessary, acupuncture can even aid in increasing the chances of conception. There are many books available if you are interested in learning more about the various natural and holistic methods available for increasing your fertility, such as Toni Weschler’s “Taking Charge of Your Fertility” or Lisa Olson’s “Pregnancy Miracle”. Unlike traditional Western methods, the holistic approach has no adverse side effects, and has a much higher chance of providing you with the baby you’ve been dreaming of!
