I am curious as to where the weight gain comes from. I understand that you have the baby, the placenta, amniotic fluid, and extra blood in your system, but it is that all that your pregnancy weight gain should be made of? If you eat exactly the same as pre-preggo you will still gain the weight? And does your body hold onto more calories when you are pregnant? Is that why some people get REALLY heavy during pregnancy, or do they just overindulge. I really do not want to gain any weight, as I am a lil bit fluffy already, but I know I will. If I eat the same as before, take my prenatals and stay healthy, I should theoreticaly only gain baby weight right?? A lot of questions I know, but thanks!

You are full of questions! Haha. But I think I have the answers. The reason that you gain weight is because your body recognizes that you are now supporting another being and holds onto more calories than before. You should be eating more than you did before you got pregnant though, since the baby needs so many more nutrients and fats then your own body did before you were pregnant. In general, you will gain nothing but “lean” weight if you gain between 25 and 45 pounds. Your body will have some additional fat stores, but they are considered lean tissue, since they will be used to support the baby during the pregnancy. Some people eat more than they need to, have a particularly low metabolism, or gain a lot of water weight during pregnancy. That is what accounts for the wide variation in pregnancy weight gain. And it is not a good idea to go into a pregnancy telling yourself you don’t want to gain weight. It can be hard, but it is entirely necessary. You might surprise yourself and not gain a lot (if you are fluffy, you can gain a bit less), but you have to trust your body and let it do it’s job. There are people who gain 70 pounds and have it all off in a month. And then those who gain the typical 25 and still hang onto 15 pounds of it after the baby is born. You just never know.
Remember you are eating for 2-eating the same as you did when you were only feeding yourself is not enough-you only need around 300 extra calories a day and what you eat can contribute to how fast you lose it once the baby comes but don’t go through your pregnancy worrying about weight gain or your baby might not get everything it needs-maintain a healthy well balanced diet
I have been eating exactly the same as before I was pregnant, actually maybe a bit less since a lot of foods make me sick. And I have still gained a few lbs. I think it’s in my breasts and a little bit in my stomach.
So yes even if you ate the same you would still gain weight. Just not as much as somebody who over indulged.
weight gain breakdown
baby- 7-8 pounds
moms breast/hips 7-11 pounds
uterus 2 pounds
placenta 1-2 pounds
increased fluids 8-12 pounds
If you have a healthy pregnancy, you should gain 25-35 pounds
yeah its very possible it happend to my sis and bff…
Hey. Yea, no one likes to gain alot of extra weight, but thats just part of pregnancy. It sucks i know. I gained like a total of 40 pounds with my preganncy, and the doctor told me it was normal. I wasn’t overly huge, all the weight was pretty much in my belly. Im mean I looked like a whale. lol but my legs and stuff stayed pretty good looking still. truth is, everyone’s body is different. some women will gain more weight than others, some will gain it all over, and some will gain it all mainly in their stoamch. but even if you eat all healthy and don’t over eat you may still put on quite a bit of weight. its nothing your doing wrong, its just natural. Im not sure the exact reason where all the extra weight comes from or is needed. but all the fluid, and placenta and baby and all that, does weigh a good amount in itself. and the extra stuff, I think the body likes to hold on to the calories alittle more, more cushion for baby. don’t worry or stress about the weight too much. it will come off after the baby is born with exercise and eating right. enjoy the pregnancy. good luck.
